The fourth and least known Belgian Shepherd Dog, the Laekenois, or Chien de Berger Belge, has yet to make it as a Hollywood icon. In fact, I’ve only spotted one Laekenois in a movie: a bit-part among a pack of other dogs in Darling Companion. Get in touch if you know other Laekenois films! Also see Belgian Malinois, Tervuren, and Groenendael.

“Freeway” is the main dog, also seen in Monster Mutt (2011). Many others with background parts. Producer Elizabeth Redleaf was so taken with the Belgian Laekenois appearing in this film, she adopted one of his relatives—a dog by the name of Albert.

The dog in this film looks startlingly like a Belgian Laekenois, although it seems unlikely there would be one in an American film from the 1950s. Perhaps a mixed breed. Thanks to a Reel Dogs visitor for the tip on this film.
